The Ballad of Pretty Polly: Yikes

Timber Wolf: Pretty Polly by Paul Slade  provides an excellent analysis of the history of one of the most disturbing Appalachian traditional ballads there is. 

There are a number of versions in which this harrowing story is set to what sounds like cheerful, jaunty music:

This version is my favorite. It captures the truly haunting, harrowing essence of this tragic tale.
